Reflection on Paraguay: What the USA Must Improve
The U.S. dominated possession and created numerous chances. Their attacking patterns frequently attacked down the flanks after creating lateral movement in the defenders’ formation via passes from the center backs.
Christian Pulisic was excellent in the first half, setting up the opening goal and assisting Folarin Balogun’s second. Balogun was clinical with two goals. However, there were moments where the U.S. forced low-percentage shots instead of taking the simpler option. Defensively, the back line was mostly solid, though there were occasional nervy moments and unnecessary fouls in dangerous areas.
What to Expect from Australia
Australia will likely bring a compact, deep defensive block. They showed against Turkey that they are well-organized and capable of frustrating stronger opponents before hitting on the counter. Patrick Beach produced a man-of-the-match performance with eight saves, while Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe provided the pair of goals in the victory.
Expect Australia to sit narrow and compact, protecting central areas, and look to spring Irankunda or other attackers in transition.
Keys to the Game for the USA
Exploit width offensively
Australia will likely sit compact and narrow. The USA should use the full width of the pitch just as they did against Paraguay.
High press to disrupt build-up
Australia could be made vulnerable when pressed high. Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie should look to win the ball in midfield and immediately spring counterattacks to try to catch the defense off balance.
Be clinical and patient in the final third
Against a compact defense, clear-cut chances can be limited. USA needs to capitalize on their chances and not make low-percentage choices in and near the box.
Players to Watch
USA
9 Striker Folarin Balogun
Balogun scored twice and looked sharp against Paraguay. He showed good movement and clinical finishing.
7 Winger Christian Pulisic
Pulisic helped create the opening goal and assisted Balogun’s second. His dribbling and creativity in tight spaces will be key to breaking down Australia.
13 Centre back Tim Ream
Ream played a composed 90 minutes against Paraguay and was strong both on the ball and defensively.
17 Midfielder Malik Tillman
Tillman was heavily involved in the build-up play against Paraguay and showed good vision with his passing. He created several dangerous moments and will look to continue linking play in the final third.
8 Attacking midfielder Weston McKennie
McKennie had a strong presence in midfield, making good passes to help spring the offense against Paraguay and scored the opening goal, which was marked as an own goal.
Australia
1 Goalkeeper Patrick Beach
Beach produced a man-of-the-match performance with eight saves. He was outstanding for Australia and will need another similar performance in order to give the Australians a chance.
6 Midfielder Paul Okon-Engstler
Okon-Engstler played well against Turkey, showing good composure on the ball and contributing to the build-up.
4 Centre back Alessandro Circati
Circati was solid defensively against Turkey and showed good distribution from the back.
8 Midfielder Connor Metcalfe
Metcalfe scored a well-taken long-range goal against Turkey.
11 Midfielder Nestory Irankunda
Irankunda scored a brilliant individual goal against Turkey with superb footwork and pace. He is a major threat on the counter and one of Australia’s most exciting attackers.
Prediction
USA 3-1 Australia
The United States should have too much quality and home support to be denied. While Australia showed they can be dangerous on the counter and are well-organized, the U.S. attack looked clinical against Paraguay. If the Americans continue to exploit width against Australia’s expected deep block as they did against Paraguay, they should create enough chances to win comfortably.
