Canada will face Morocco in the Round of 16 on Saturday at NRG Stadium in Houston, marking the first time in their history they have reached the Round of 16 stage of a World Cup, coming off their first knockout victory over South Africa 1-0. Morocco is coming off a 1-1 win over the Netherlands on penalties.

It is a rematch of the third match window of the 2022 group stage meeting that saw Morocco emerge victorious 2-1 before going on a run to the semi-finals. Canada was eliminated from making it through that group of death that also had Croatia and Belgium,

This is a massive moment for Canadian soccer. A win would send them into the quarter-finals for the first time ever.

Reflection on South Africa: What Canada Must Carry Forward

Canada’s win over South Africa felt like the Canadians were in control the majority of the match. The game was in South Africa’s end far more than Canada’s, despite Canada having 42% possession and Canada having 7 shots on target to South Africa’s 7. The late introduction of Alphonso Davies nearly paid immediate dividends when he made a great cross to Promise David, and the team continued to look more threatening as the game progressed.

Stephen Eustaquio had arguably his best set-piece day of the tournament. His corners and free kicks were well struck and dangerous, and he capped off his game with a superbly taken stoppage-time winner from the edge of the box after a loose ball dropped to him.

There were still areas that need improvement over the tournament. Canada has been excellent in it’s ability to create chances and is currently tied with Germany for 2nd in the tournament in shots on target per game at 7 trailing only France who has 8.5. However, this has not led to as many goals as it could have as Canada has at times been wasteful with their finishing, and there were moments where rushed decision-making in the final third limited the lethality of an attack. Defensively, Canada has been solid but had 2 lapses in defending that led to both the goals against Switzerland and that can not be repeated against Morocco.

What to Expect from Morocco

Morocco are a very well-organized and physical side. They are compact defensively, strong in duels, and dangerous on the counter-attack. They typically stay defensively disciplined frustrating opponents, and hit quickly through transitions or set pieces.

Expect Morocco to sit compact, win their share of physical battles, and look to punish any mistakes Canada make in possession or defensive positioning. They are experienced at this stage after making it all the way to the semi-finals last World Cup.

Keys to the Game for Canada

Score First to Disrupt Morocco’s Low Block

If Canada can score early, Morocco will be forced to abandon their deep defensive line and push forward, disrupting their preferred style of play.

Canada needs world class play from striker Jonathan David the rest of the tournament and quality finishing from the rest of the attackers.

Aggressive, Restrictive Counter-Pressing

Canada often demonstrates high-energy pressing under Jesse Marsch. Canada needs to hunt in packs the second they lose it, preventing Morocco’s long-range transition passes.

Wing Back Overloads

Canada should look to their speedy full backs to overload the flanks and draw Moroccan central defenders wider to create more space in the middle.

Lethal Set Piece Execution

Last game was by far the best in set piece taking by Stephen Eustaquio in my opinion. There were some matches this tournament where Canada’s set piece taking left room for improvement, but there were many dangerous balls sent from set pieces for Canada in the recent win against South Africa. This must continue.

Canada

19 Winger Alphonso Davies

Davies came into the match in the 75th minute and looked very threatening with his dribbling in one-on-one scenarios and brings tremendous pace to Canada. It was his first appearance in the World Cup so far this tournament.

17 Winger Tajon Buchanan

After the loss to Switzerland, I was very critical of Tajon for not seeming to bring that same fire in his play that brought tremendous power and grit to Canada that he would so often bring for Canada in the past, but instead seemed to be focused on being a thespian trying to manipulate the official.

Against South Africa, he looked like the old Tajon Buchanan, bringing grit and aggression in his play that perfectly embodies the Canadian spirit. While he didn’t create a lot of chances, he was playing with power and grit and made some nice takeaways. I particularly liked his shoulder-to-shoulder tackle in the 11th minute that looked like a solid body check in the corner.

7 MF Stephen Eustaquio

Eustaquio was excellent in his set-piece deliveries last match and scored the lone goal in the 1-0 victory over South Africa.

25 MF Nathan Saliba

Saliba has been excellent for Canada in the midfield, stepping into the role after injury to Ismael Kone against Qatar. He had 3 pass interceptions last game and won 6 of his 10 ground duels and both of his aerial duels.

16 G Maxime Crepeau

Crepeau had a 2-save clean sheet against South Africa. He allowed 1-goal that he should have saved against Switzerland, but has been essentially without error this tournament outside of that moment. Canada will need him to make some big saves throughout the rest of the tournament.

Morocco

11 Striker Ismael Saibari

Saibari scored a goal in each of Morocco’s group stage games but did not have a shot in the last game.

8 MF Azzedine Ounahi

Ounahi completed 94% of his passes in the last game and was a focal point of Morocco’s offensive distribution.

3 LB Noussair Mazraoui

Mazraoui had a strong defensive presence last match, winning all 5 of his ground duels last match, was successful on 4 of his 5 tackles, and had 12 clearances.

2 RB Achraf Hakimi

Dangerous right back who attacks relentlessly and causes frequent problems.

1 GK Yassine Bounou

Bounou saw his team emerge victorious through penalties over the Netherlands and had 1 save in the game. He has saved 6 of the 10 shots faced over the 4 games.

Prediction

Canada 3-1 Morocco.

Canada has not yet played to their highest potential, and I expect them to rise up to play their best football yet and shock the world. When Canada is playing their style of play, they can be a danger to anyone, such as in the semi-finals in the last Copa America that saw them put Argentina on their heels for stretches of the game.
